Youth Serve in North Sacramento

Youth Serve in North Sacramento

by Sierra Service Project

Over two weekends, January 16th-18th and February 13th-15th, nearly 100 volunteers have gathered to serve the community of North Sacramento and put their faith into action in 2015. Over half of these volunteers came from seven different Episcopal churches from The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California. Youth and adults worked with groups from other churches in North Sacramento, as part of Sierra Service Project’s Weekends of Service program.

This program brings together youth and adults from many different backgrounds to serve in short bursts, as brothers and sisters in Christ. With volunteers arriving on Friday evening and departing Sunday afternoon, it seems hard to believe that there is a significant impact being made in the North Sacramento community. However, in just two weekends, 94 volunteers have contributed over 1,000 volunteer-hours towards repairing community gardens, maintaining an elderly homeowner’s yard and painting a local nonprofit. Groups also learned about the positive forces for change in the community including Loaves and Fishes, Harvest Sacramento and The Grace Network.

More weekends are being scheduled for the fall of 2015.

Sierra Service Project also offers challenging, well-run and exciting summer service experiences for high school and middle school youth. Spaces are still available for the 2015 summer, including a local site in Stockton, California.
