“Wonderful, Joyful Summer” at CNP

“Wonderful, Joyful Summer” at CNP

by the Rev. Jenni Liem, Executive Director, Camp Noel Porter

Now that August is here and there is a bit of nip in the air at Lake Tahoe, it is time to tell all of the good news of this year’s summer camp season at Camp Noel Porter. We hosted seven sessions of camp this year and our summer theme was "Joyful, joyful we adore you."

We welcomed 137 campers over our seven weeks, and also enjoyed our Counselor-In-Training (CIT) week this year with our eight CITs. Esteban Hernandez, from St. Mary’s, Napa, shared, "I was nervous about going to counselors' training, but I made it through! I love coming to Camp Noel Porter every summer. I’m excited to apply for Staff next year.” Anna May Testerman from Trinity Cathedral, Sacramento said, “Camp is the place where I am most free to be me. I want to share that with younger campers.”

The staff included four returning member: Shelby Larkey (St. Michael’s, Carmichael and St. Augustine, Rocklin); Danielle Hubbard (St. Nicholas', Paradise); Elizabeth Potts and Chris Lindsey (both from Epiphany, Vacaville), and Nevin WyGant (a legacy at Camp Noel Porter). We welcome the following new members as well: Anna Wiley (Trinity Cathedral, Sacramento); Ani DiPirro and Ryan Bandacarri (both long time campers at Camp Noel Porter).

The campers ranged from rising second-graders to graduated seniors. One of the highlights of this summer was rafting on the Truckee River with the middle, junior high and senior high camps. The Rev. Dave Ferrell can tell you when those rafts get swamped, they can be hard to float on the river! Some of the wonderful arts and crafts projects included making clay snakes with the Rev. Sally Hubbell of St. Paul’s, Healdsberg, traveling oils with the Rev. Megan Anderson, journals and memory books with the Rev. Matt Warren. And were there games?? During Junior Camp, there was an epic Quiddich match on the volleyball court and the perennial Capture the Flag on Monday evenings. And ask the Rev. Seth Kellerman about playing for the Orange team!

Camp Noel Porter owes a tremendous debt to supporters and donors who provided full and partial scholarships to campers this year. Thank you to Faith, Cameron Park; All Saints, Sacramento; Trinity Cathedral, Sacramento; St Nicholas', Paradise; St Nicholas', Tahoe City; Epiphany, Vacaville; St. Mary’s, Napa; St. Martin’s, Davis and St. Michael’s, Carmichael.

As the summer winds down and school begins, it is now time to turn our attention to the fall season at Camp Noel Porter. We are excited to have groups from Emmanuel, Grass ValleySt. Francis', Fair Oaks and St Martin’s, Davis as just a few of our guests this Fall. We are also excited to welcome back Cursillo for the third year at Camp Noel Porter. If you are looking for a place to host a retreat weekend, consider Camp Noel Porter this year.

And the fall season is also the exciting time of our "Light Up The Night Gala," held on October 11, 2014 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Carmichael. Please join us for a night under the stars, benefiting the ministries and programs of Camp Noel Porter. Our annual Gala is just a few weeks away and we want to tell you the wonderful stories of camp and retreats that have been part of our year. We also want to take you on a tour of our redecorated rooms and Camp kitchen – but we can only do that if you are at the Gala! Go on-line now and purchase your tickets to the Light Up The Night Gala at www.cnphappenings.com/LightUpTheNight/

With so many great stories to tell about Camp Noel Porter, we hope you will join us to hear them all on October 11, 2014! See you there!
