Thought-Provoking Forum in Gualala

Thought-Provoking Forum in Gualala

by Phil Graf, Mission Committee Chair, Shepherd by the Sea, Gualala

As the current chair of the Mission Committee for Shepherd by the Sea in Gualala, a small, lively and happy church family, I would like to report that we are celebrating the success of an outreach project resulting from the Ministry Development Grant we received from the Congregational Vitalization Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California. Our project proposal was to bring outside speakers in to address the larger community here on the "Mendonoma" (Mendocino and Sonoma) coast to speak on basic questions about the meaning of life.

A stimulating and well attended forum at the Gualala Art Center on July 17, 2014 was the result of this project. More than fifty people from the area were treated to an evening with Tim Stafford, a journalist from Santa Rosa with over 25 books and hundreds of magazine articles to his credit. His latest work, The Adam Quest, profiles eleven scientists who are involved in discussions about creation and evolution from a faith perspective. Stafford shared his experience of interviewing these scientists, some quite famous in their fields, and described their varying perspectives on how faith and evolution fit together - or don't. Thoughtful and thought-provoking questions followed.

The Shepard by the Sea Forum Committee is now in the planning stages of our next offering, with the hope of furthering the spiritual journeys of the extended "Mendonoma" community.
