Soup-er Episcopalians

It is said that “man does not live by bread alone.” For five weeks during the Lenten season at Trinity Episcopal Church in Sonoma, thirty Episcopal men and women parishioners gathered each Wednesday evening to share faith, soup, bread and salad. They also shared in a series of discussions about Episcopal identity and liturgy, led by Priest-in-Charge, the Rev. Canon Jim Thomas.

Each Wednesday volunteers from the parish provided a choice of three home-cooked soups, at least one of which was vegetarian. (A straw poll of favorites included lentil, beef-with-barley and chicken tortilla). “We initiated the Lenten soup suppers last year,” said Fr. Thomas, noting, “the focus was on nourishing the soul as well as the body.” In addition to joining in prayers of thanksgiving this Lenten season, participants also enjoyed dialog framed by readings from A People Called Episcopalians, a 40-page pamphlet authored in 1998 by the Rev. Dr. John H. Westerhoff (noted professor of theology and founding director of the Institute for Pastoral Studies at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Georgia) which is an insightful introduction to Episcopal history, organization and spiritual beliefs.

“It’s wonderful to see the interaction of our parishioners during these meals,” observed Fr. Thomas, “and to share in their growing understanding of our unique Anglican character, as believers in Jesus Christ and as members of His church.” With a twinkle, he concluded, “It’s also rewarding for our parishioners to enjoy the culinary talents of our ‘souper’ communicants!”
