Renowned Bible Scholar in Sacramento

Renowned Bible Scholar in Sacramento

by The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California

The Rt. Rev. N.T. Wright is Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at St. Andrews’ University in Scotland, and is regarded as one of the foremost Christian theologians of our time. Bishop Wright will visit the Sacramento area for two speaking events in May, where he will discuss equipping leaders for tomorrow’s Church. Author of volumes of articles, papers and 75 books, including the recently published Surprised by Scripture, Bishop Wright has taught New Testament Studies at Cambridge, McGill and Oxford Universities. In addition, from 2003 to 2010, he was the Bishop of Durham in the Church of England.

On Thursday, May 28th he will present “Paul for Tomorrow’s World” at William Jessup University in Rocklin, CA and on Friday, May 29th he will present “Paul's Vision For the Church and Ours” at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Roseville, CA. To purchase tickets for these events, please click here.

As a pioneering scholar in both Biblical Studies and Theology, Bishop Wright is insistent that the elements of the biblical story be considered in light of broader worldview questions. This insistence encourages a deeper understanding of the scriptures, as well as how its messages relate to our contemporary world. Bishop Wright’s ability to write and speak at both a scholarly and a popular level has helped many people to think carefully about Christian faith and life. He is known to say, “There’s no point in giving 16th century answers to 19th century questions.” Rather, he believes what is needed are “21st Century answers to 1st century questions.” One area where Bishop Wright has made a pioneering contribution in biblical studies is his understanding that in the New Testament era, Jews of all schools of thought felt that they were still, in some sense, in Exile. And the earliest Christians taught that with the coming, life, death and Resurrection of Jesus the Messiah, the long awaited end of exile has come.

The Rev. Peter Rodgers has known Bishop Wright for 40 years. They met as graduate students at Oxford University in the mid-70s. “Since our Oxford days, +Tom and I have remained in touch as friends,” says the Rev. Rodgers, “and we have continued to correspond over the years about matters of biblical interpretation and Christian faith and life.” The Rev. Rodgers now serves as the Vicar at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Antelope, CA and is the Administrative Director of The Center for Bible Study, which is also based at St. Andrew’s. “Wright’s lectures are winsome and engaging,” shares the Rev. Rodgers. “His thoughts on ‘Paul’s Vision of the Church’ will help to sharpen our own thinking about how to best meet the challenges of tomorrow with Christian confidence, skill and sensitivity, and will challenge us to make our churches welcoming and life-giving.”

The Center for Bible Study and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Roseville will host Bishop Wright on Friday, May 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at St. John’s Church, located at 2351 Pleasant Grove Blvd. in Roseville. "St. John's is delighted to host this opportunity for our community to engage with Bishop Wright. He is a thoughtful scholar, wise teacher and cares passionately about proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ,” says the Very Rev. Cliff Haggenjos, Rector at St. John’s, Roseville. “His recent writings about Paul are helping all of us take a closer and deeper look at how the New Testament informs our lives today. We are excited to have the opportunity to gather together and learn from him." Following Bishop Wright’s presentation, the Rev. Rodgers will moderate an on-stage conversation and interview with the Bishop, and take questions from the audience. “A person hearing +Tom lecture on Paul is bound to find something new to think about and wrestle with,” says the Rev. Rodgers. Refreshments and a book signing will follow this presentation. Childcare is also available on site and does not require a reservation. Click here to purchase tickets for this event online.

During his visit to the region, Bishop Wright will also be the guest speaker at The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California’s 2015 Clergy Conference, where he will present “Paul in His World and Ours.” Bishop Wright has written extensively on Paul, including the epic 1,660-page work Paul and the Faithfulness of God. The Rt. Rev. Barry Beisner, bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California, is thrilled to welcome Bishop Wright to address the clergy of his diocese at their Clergy Conference. "As a scholar, teacher and witness, Bishop Wright is one of the most significant and influential leaders in the Church today,” says Bishop Beisner. “It is a great gift to us to have him here."
