The Episcopal Church Rolls Out New Tool for Evangelism, Outreach and Disaster Mitigation

On March 10, 2015, the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society and Episcopal Relief & Development announced a joint venture that has produced a dynamic tool that will enable every diocese to highlight and enrich their local ministries, as well as increase evangelism, outreach and disaster preparedness. The tool is called the Episcopal Asset Map.

Since 2013, the diocesan Disaster Committee, Episcopal Community Services and deacons from across The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California have been collaborating with Episcopal Relief & Development and The Episcopal Church Justice and Advocacy Ministries to create the Episcopal Asset Map. The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California was one of the original five dioceses participating in the pilot program. This program will eventually include the entire Episcopal Church. Margaret Dunning, Disaster Coordinator for The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California, is championing this program in meetings, presentations and trainings across Northern California, including at the recent diocesan Congregational Leadership Conferences (CLCs).

Using the Map

The Episcopal Asset Map features a searchable, map-based database of programs, ministries, church facilities and other resources of Episcopal organizations throughout The Episcopal Church. If you are contemplating a new outreach project in your own congregation, the Asset Map can be used to locate other local churches that may be engaged in similar ministries, and where partnerships, advice or guidance can be found. In a disaster, the Asset Map can be utilized to locate churches and facilities in your area that may have emergency power, cooking facilities, food banks, sleeping accommodations or Red Cross relief stations. There is a national Asset Map and each diocese has an individual Asset Map. View the Asset Map for The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California here:

Today, your church can begin establishing its place and presence on the Asset Map. To start the process, simply visit the diocesan Asset Map, locate your congregation and begin selecting the types of ministries and resources within your congregation and filling in the correct contact information. Your congregation can enter the information that is most helpful for identifying and highlighting the ministries, services and facilities your congregation provides and has available in times of need. Photos and videos can be included as well, and can increase the visibility of your ministries.
