Join the Call to Witness Ministry

by the Rev. Steve Skiffington, Deacon, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Sacramento

How many times have you heard about a community meeting, rally or demonstration regarding an issue of concern that took place yesterday? You may have thought to yourself  “if I’d only known, I would have been there!” Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Sacramento is pleased to announce Call to Witness, a new ministry to keep you in the loop!

There are times when people of faith, and our values, need to be seen and heard. Community meetings, sessions of elected officials, vigils, rallies and marches can offer us the opportunity to publicly respond as caring, Christian people to issues that affect our sisters and brothers, the larger community and society as a whole. Call to Witness is intended to let you know about those times. Call to Witness is not a system to send out information about regular meetings and events in the community or even here at Trinity Cathedral. Rather, Call to Witness is designed to inform you of specific events where your presence is needed to make a strong statement. To sign-up and join the Call to Witness email list, please click here

-Notifications will be sent directly to you via email with the subject line: Call to Witness.

-When a notice is sent, it will give the date, time and location of the event and a very brief explanation of the issue.

-Notifications for an event will be sent only once. You will not receive multiple notifications of the same event. The number of notices you might receive are dictated by the number of events in the community. You might receive one or two a month. It’s possible there might not be any notices at all for a stretch of time. The Holy Spirit moves as She will!

-Please respond ‘yes’ to the e-mail if you will be in attendance at an event, so we can have general idea of the number of people to expect. If you are not able to attend an event, you need do nothing with the notice and can simply delete it.

-You are not expected to respond with your presence at every event.

-You may “opt out” of Call to Witness at any time.

I first introduced Call to Witness to the congregation at Trinity Cathedral, and I’m pleased to say there has been a good response. Then I started thinking that this is too good to be limited to one congregation. So, if you are in a congregation in the Sacramento region, consider signing up for this ministry and serve with us. And if you are not in the Sacramento region, consider establishing such a ministry in your own area.

Ministry takes many forms, and one of the strongest can be our presence. Thank you for considering this very important and public ministry of witness.
