Homeless and Hungry

Homeless and Hungry

by the Rev. Dave Ferrell, deacon at Holy Trinity, Nevada City

Thank you Lord, Thank you Lord, Thank you Lord, Amen. It is the prayer I offer before each meal for the homeless & hungry. It is also how I am often greeted in the community.

Throughout the Bible, we are called to share our abundance with those who are less fortunate than ourselves. I no longer refer to them as the poor. I came to this decision after working with many of these people over the years. Realizing that but for the grace of God go I. There are so many of us that are only a paycheck or two away from being there ourselves.

Yesterday, I toured the kitchen at Utah’s Place. That is our new homeless shelter in Nevada County. For the last five years, churches in the community have provided lodging & food for the homeless. Those who provide housing, provide meals. Trinity falls into the latter category and I am proud to say that we were the first such church to do so. Our new facility opened three weeks ago.

In addition, to providing these meals Trinity and Emanuel Grass Valley alternate Tuesday nights feeding those who do not qualify for the shelter. This includes people with pets, those who have a place to live but are hungry, and those still dealing with alcohol or drug problems.

One of the joys I have in this ministry is when someone new volunteers. No matter how un-judgmental we think we are, we all have some preconceived notion about who the homeless are. To see their faces when they realize these are fellow human beings. Some even have jobs but do not make enough to even pay for a place to stay. Those who help our Tuesday night ministry also get a different perspective on those addicted to alcohol or drugs. Again they find that these are people with problems. Learning to love and accept people but not their actions. It can be life changing.
