Episcopal Asiamerica Ministries Celebrate

by The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California

Bishop Barry Beisner and the Rev. Bayani Rico, President of the Episcopal Asiamerica Ministries Council  and Rector at Ascension Episcopal Church in Vallejo, joined Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori at the Episcopal Asiamerica Ministries (EAM) International Consultation in Seoul, South Korea from September 30th - October 5th. During this time, Korean Anglicans also celebrated 125 Years of Mission and Ministry, with a special Eucharist that combined Korean and Anglican traditions to mark the anniversary.

Episcopal Asiamerica Ministries is an association of Asian Americans from China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Southeast Asian and South Asian convocations. This ministry is based in the United States and serves U.S. born Asians and Asian immigrants, and relates to churches in Asia that, primarily, belong to the Anglican Communion.

"Asian American or “Asiamerican” describes both Asian immigrants in the United States as well as Asian Americans born in the United States – Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Japanese, Southeast Asian (Vietnamese, Laotian, Hmong, Burmese), and South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan)," reports Mary Frances Schjonberg, Episcopal News Service reporter. "The EAM office offers resources on mission work, church revitalization, and racial justice – among and beyond Asian communities in the United States. It assists dioceses to start new Asian congregations and strengthen existing ones, and advocates for Asian empowerment at all levels of the church: among seminarians, women, youth, clergy, and lay leaders."
