Education for Ministry Training Recap

Education for Ministry Training Recap

by Sally Rooney, Education for Ministry Coordinator for the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California

The recent Education for Ministry (EfM) Training was held at the Mercy Center Auburn from June 11-13, 2014. The group of 22 EfM Mentors were provided annual training in mentoring skills and practices. The theme this year was “Living Faithfully in a Multicultural Context.”

Training was provided by three enthusiastic trainers: Dr. Richard Guentert, Jennifer Wickham, and the Rev. Virginia McNeely. The time and learning was intense, but engaging. The meals and natural beauty of the surroundings continue to be inspiring, the cookies beyond excellent and the staff at Mercy Center committed to meeting our every need.

We all left feeling we had spent time with people devoted to discernment, service and ministry. We engaged in exciting and insightful conversations using established protocols to guide our conversations. We worshiped together in our groups and enjoyed evenings of fellowship. God’s presence was experienced in our new learning, in clarification of concerns through guided conversations, through our moments of disequilibrium and in our eventual insights that will, in time, broaden our own mentoring.

We are grateful to The University of the South, Sewanee for providing this wonderful program to us, and to our own Episcopal Diocese of Northern California for supporting the EfM program by maintaining a license with Sewanee. EfM is a wonderful gift that helps us to extend and develop our relationship with God through ministry and service.

The 2015 EfM Mentor Training will be August 5 - 7, 2015 at Mercy Center Auburn.
