“Do It! Just Do It!”

“Do It! Just Do It!”

by the Rev. Kathryn Wallace, Deacon, St. Barnabas', Mount Shasta

This fall I attended my first Kairos Prison Ministry experience with the Rev. Susan M. Reeve, Deacon at St. Brigid's, Rio Vista. I heard so many good things about Kairos while I was at The School for Deacons, and I attended their closing ceremony last spring and was totally impressed. The process for joining the Kairos experience seemed fairly simple: go to a bit of training, show up at the prison, do our work and come home. With that vision, I began the training last summer.

We had a group of 34 women going into Chowchilla Women’s State Prison, planning to work with 42 inmates. The training was extensive, including four trips from Mt. Shasta to Fresno for Saturday workshops. As I continued on, I realized the complexity of what we were going to attempt! There are many rules, but there is also an atmosphere that needs to be created so the women feel safe talking to us. We also had to share our experience with Jesus Christ in a “real” way, a way that can be heard by these women.

I am so happy to tell you that the weekend surpassed all of my hopes and expectations! I was literally blown away by the women we met – women just like you and me, who had made a few bad choices. We succeeded in gathering momentum as we progressed through the weekend, and on Monday all 42 women said that Jesus Christ was their savior and they wanted to continue. If you are interested in any small way in joining the Kairos experience, all I can say is “Do it! Just do it!”
