Davis Supporting Foundation Cristosal

Davis Supporting Foundation Cristosal

by Lynn Zender, Member, Episcopal Church of St. Martin in Davis

As its 2016 Lenten Project, the Episcopal Church of St. Martin in Davis, raised $7,274.00 for Foundation Cristosal. Cristosal is a human rights organization based in the Episcopal Diocese of El Salvador, which works to strengthen the ability of the poor to act for justice and development as equal citizens in a democratic society (see www.cristosal.org).

One of the goals of Cristosal is to address the refugee crisis caused by extreme violence in El Salvador. Applying an “upstream” approach, it focuses on the development of stronger political, societal and economic structures to reduce the extreme violence that causes the migration out of the country. More immediately, Cristosal is working to meet the emergency needs of families, particularly children and women, who are facing imminent severe harm and even death in their communities in El Salvador. In 2015, over 107 children received direct assistance from Cristosal and its partners, including temporary shelter and humanitarian and legal assistance.

On April 6th, members of the St. Martin's Social Justice and Outreach Commission met with Cristosal's Executive Director, Noal Bullock, and the Rev. Amy Denney Zuniga, Rector at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Hollister, to discuss the work of Cristosal. The Rev. Zuniga worked in El Salvador with Cristosal, and continues her support as a board member. St. Martin's wants to continue to support Cristosal as it works with Salvadorans to build strong civil society structures in their country. St. Martin's plans will actively seek to enlist other congregations in our diocese in this endeavor on behalf of Cristosal and its companion, the Episcopal Diocese of El Salvador.
