Bishops Lead 2015 Holy Land Pilgrimage

by The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California

The Rt. Rev. Barry Beisner, Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Northern California and the Rt. Rev. Greg Rickel, Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Olympia, led a pilgrimage to the Holy Land for bishops and clergy in The Episcopal Church on January 12-23, 2015.

"The Holy Land holds a unique place in the hearts and minds of all who follow Christ, and a visit to the region offers a very particular opportunity to engage with our sacred Scriptures and to learn more of the foundational stories of our faith," said the Bishops in a letter to attendees. "Alongside the chance to visit the sites and shrines associated with the life of Jesus," the Bishops continue, "a pilgrimage brings the chance both to engage with the Christians of today's Holy Land, as well as discovering at first hand something of the reality of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict."

The pilgrimage began in north Israel, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, and included such highlights as Mount Tabor, Nazareth, the Mount of Beatitudes, the Jordan River, the ancient city of Hebron and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. "A pilgrimage of this kind offers real opportunity for enrichment, education, fellowship and refreshment," the Bishops offer. "As the opening chapter of St. John's Gospel shows us Jesus inviting his disciples to come and see for themselves where he was staying, so now we hope you will be able to come and see the places and peoples of his land today."
